Understanding Hit Registration (Hitreg) Issues
Hit registration (hitreg) is the process of servers detecting whether your shots hit enemies. Poor hitreg feels like bullets pass through enemies without damage. This has several causes: high ping (server lagging), server performance issues, player position desyncs, or your low FPS affecting registration.
High ping is the primary hitreg culprit. A 100ms ping means the server has delayed information about your position. The player's actual position differs from your view, causing apparent misses. Low ping (under 50ms) minimizes hitreg issues. If experiencing hitreg problems, check your ping first.
Server quality affects hitreg. Valve's servers maintain stable registration in most cases. If entire team experiences hitreg issues simultaneously, server problems are likely. Individual hitreg issues usually indicate your client-side problems (ping, FPS, client-side prediction).
Low FPS can cause hitreg issues: fewer frames per second mean less frequent updates to server about your aim. 60 FPS provides poor hitreg compared to 240+ FPS. If experiencing hitreg despite good ping, increasing FPS might help. CS2 generally provides good hitreg; consistent hitreg problems usually indicate network/hardware issues needing diagnosis.
Key Points
- Hitreg: server detection of bullet hits
- High ping primary hitreg cause
- Low FPS reduces hitreg quality
- Server issues affect all players
- Usually client-side problems
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Blaming hitreg for missed shots
- Not checking ping
- Ignoring FPS impact
- Assuming server problems
- Not understanding prediction/hitreg mechanics
