Getting Started in CS2
A no-nonsense roadmap for new Counter-Strike 2 players: set things up properly, learn the modes, and practise the right things first.
Set up before you queue
Before your first match, spend ten minutes on setup. It pays off quickly.
- Enable the developer console (Settings > Game), so you can use practice commands later.
- Pick a resolution and graphics preset that gives you a stable, high frame rate — our best settings page covers the options that matter most.
- Choose a sensitivity and leave it alone. Most experienced players favour a fairly low eDPI for steadier aim.
- Build a clean, static crosshair you can see clearly against busy backgrounds.
Learn the modes
Counter-Strike 2 has several ways to play, and they suit different goals:
- Casual / Deathmatch — low pressure, great for warming up and learning maps.
- Competitive — five-on-five on a single map you choose, with a per-map skill group.
- Premier — the headline ranked mode with a map veto and one numeric CS Rating that follows you everywhere.
Start in Casual and Deathmatch to learn callouts and weapon recoil, then move to Competitive or Premier once you feel comfortable.
Ranks and rating
Premier gives you a numeric CS Rating grouped into colour bands, while Competitive keeps the classic Silver-to-Global skill groups per map. Don't obsess over rank early on — it settles naturally as your fundamentals improve.
Understand the economy
Each round rewards you for kills, objectives and wins, plus a loss bonus that grows after consecutive defeats. The core skill is deciding when to full-buy, when to save (eco) and when to force-buy. As a rule of thumb, coordinate buys with your team rather than half-buying alone.
What to practise first
Prioritise the fundamentals that win duels: crosshair placement at head height, counter-strafing for accurate first shots, and learning one or two maps well rather than all of them poorly. If you only do one thing, practise stopping before you shoot.
